Podcasting Lectures: Pro and Cons
Posted by Hendry Lee in Podcast News
Podcasting lectures could be a great classroom tool, but the debates is going on between the pros and cons.
It it obvious that allowing students to download podcast lectures allows them to listen to the lecture again while studying. If a student ever missed a class, he/ she would at least have the recording to listen to. The idea of listening to lectures on iPod (and any other media device) is very new and allows some flexibility.
Contrarily, a professor argues that podcasting is good in theory but may decrease classroom attendance. Other professors have strict rules when it comes to attendance, so they might not like a service that allows time-shifting.
If podcasting is to be implemented, and if attendance is not required for the class, there is a good chance that more students will stay at home instead of coming to class. It literally took away the importance of classroom experience, such as interactivity.
The professor also worries about leaking his precious material out there for everybody and the freshness of the material because he always come up with new ways of presenting his information.
