Online Video Viewers Prefer Short Format

A new AP and AOL video poll shows that only one in five online video viewers has watched or downloaded a full-length movie or television show. The number is quite slim considering more than half of Internet users have watched or downloaded video.

News clips were the most popular online video format seen by 72 percent of online viewers. Other popular video formats are short movie and TV clips, music videos, sports highlights and user-generated amateur videos.

This number, in my opinion, is considered high especially if we consider that fact that not all people have high-speed Internet access. As the trend moves toward more broadband adoption, we should see only more people consumption of online videos.

In fact, generally one-third of video viewers admitted that they watched more video on the Internet now than a year ago.

Dial-up users are not to be neglected because 22 percent of them still watch videos at least once a week. If we are to serve videos to this group, a smaller, lower quality videos should be available.

Another interesting result is that respondents preferred ad-supported service. Only 7 percent of video users have paid to watch any video online.

Some Thoughts about Video Podcasting

http://podcastingscout.com/video-podcasting-guideOnline video is cool, but video podcast — vodcast, vidcast, whatever — still has a quite disturbing barrier to entry. Video podcast has limited supported video formats (H.264 and MPEG-4) which supported by iPod.

Other file formats are fine for enclosure attachments but are not playable on iPod. It could still be useful considering that many people still consume videos right on their computer instead of carrying them while commuting — timeshifting.

If video producers are to vodcasting, they have to produce at least two popular formats. Lower resolution is faster to download, good for dial-up users but currently Google Video wants higher quality videos with recommended 30 frames per second.

Although video is growing at a rapid rate this year, video podcast is not something to write home about yet.
