Gartner: Blog and RSS are in the Trough, Podcasting Over-Hyped
Posted by Hendry Lee in Podcast News
Gartner published a PDF presentation titled Emerging Technologies Hype Cycle 2005. The presentation describes the hype cycle of technology in terms of visibility and maturity.
Podcasting is still on the rise, while corporate blogging and Really Simple Syndication (RSS) begin to slide into the trough.
Technology maturity was divided into five major stages: technology trigger, peak of inflated expectations, trough of disillusionment, slope of enlightenment, and finally plateau of productivity.
The problem is that people tend to join in just because it’s in and miss out just because it’s out. Major trend overload cause us to develop noise filter that could easily become blind spot, hence the problem.
After a moment of trough, good technology will survive and show a stabler grow so it is important to develop awareness on trends that can possibly improve your business and plan ahead.
Most small business and service professional can’t afford to spend $495 just for 26 page research report, for which only small part of it could be useful for their business.
In my humble opinion, small business don’t follow every cutting edge technology to succeed. Common sense is often more helpful. Just choose a few that you can implement persistently to communicate with your prospects and customers. Or simply follow on a proven system, not over-hyped one and only guru’s solution.
Small business and independent professional need to be aware of current inexpensive technology though, to effectively increase their visibility.
